Wild, beautiful and pristine. Long Beach Lodge Resort is eternally grateful to be part of this incredible coastline. Every decision we make as a business aims to help preserve this delicate ecosystem for future generations.

We’re continually adapting our operations to minimize our environmental impact by taking on both small-scale and large-scale initiatives that keep Long Beach Lodge Resort at the forefront of Sustainable Hospitality. As a full-service hotel with a robust Food and Beverage department and a Surf School, we have a unique set of issues that we have to face in a sustainable manner.

Water Conservation

In Fall 2025, Long Beach Lodge Resort installed an on-site well to keep up with our own demand and also to minimize our impact on the community’s freshwater supply. The well provides water for our hot tubs, hot pool, outdoor showers and Surf Club’s gear rinsing cycles. During peak season, these cycles alone can use between 1,340 and 1,670 liters per day, so the well helps to relieve pressure on local freshwater reserves.

The community of Tofino, in spite of its location in a temperate rainforest, will occasionally face water shortages. Almost all of the local water supply comes from five rain-fed creeks across the inlet on Meares Island, and the District implements various stages of water conservation that guide our own usage.

As part of Tofino’s Every Drop Counts campaign, our Housekeeping Department offers an optional linen and towel service to help reduce our laundry cycles. We use low-flush toilets across the resort and we’ve also planted native, drought-resistant plants to help conserve water.

Our Food and Beverage Department uses state-of-the-art equipment alongside practical techniques to reduce water usage in our kitchens. And in all departments across the resort, we’re always looking for new ways, however small, to conserve and even reuse water whenever possible.

Energy and Transportation

As of 2022, our entire fleet of both maintenance and laundry vehicles has gone electric, and we have eight EV charging stations for guests who have made the drive out here without the use of gasoline.

No matter how our guests arrive, we encourage them to stay close and enjoy everything the resort has to offer, including three separate food outlets, a spa, a surf school and access to one of the planet’s most beautiful beaches. This cuts down on a lot of driving. And if you do want to head into town, we now rent E-Bikes at Surf Club.

We also use LED lights across the whole property and Housekeeping ensures that the lights are off and the thermostats are down in all unoccupied rooms.

Long Beach Lodge is on a continual mission to update all appliances and equipment with the most energy-efficient units available. These upgrades are a huge part of our yearly closure. It’s an ongoing process. But here at the lodge, we believe that Sustainability is a journey, not a destination.

Waste Reduction

Long Beach Lodge has long-since eliminated single-use plastics on our property and we use only compostable takeaway containers, coffee cups and cutlery. These are a few of the practices that have led The Surfrider Foundation to recognize us as an Ocean Friendly Business.

We also work with Surfrider on their ReSurf program, which helps us repurpose used gear from our Surf Club. And Surfrider has partnered with the lodge on their Hold On To Your Butt Campaign, which aims to reduce cigarette litter out here on our beautiful coast.

As part of  The Den: Quality Goods & Refillery’s Business Refill Program, we refill all guest products in rooms, public areas, and washrooms. And we use locally-produced goods whenever possible. Our Housekeeping Department uses Mint Cleaning Supplies, a Ucluelet-based company that only offers non-aerosol, eco-friendly cleaning products.

Guests are encouraged to separate recycling and compost in their rooms, helping us actively reduce waste and promote sustainable practices throughout the resort and beyond.

Our kitchens conduct routine food waste audits and adjust their practices and portioning accordingly. They also partner with local farms and fisheries which not only cuts down on transportation, but also ensures the freshest ingredients.

Whether it’s keeping packaging out of the landfill with our refillery program, working with Surfrider to source sustainable products, or simply being mindful during our daily operations, our goal is to eliminate as much waste as possible.

Sustainability Commitments

A 1% Sustainability Fee on all overnight stays contributes directly to West Coast sustainability projects. And we actively support employee-led initiatives such as beach cleans and other local conservation efforts.

We’re committed to working with regional producers and employing sustainable culinary practices. As an Ocean Wise member, we serve only sustainably sourced seafood. This focus on locally-sourced, sustainable ingredients is one of many reasons that dining at the resort is such a special experience.

Long Beach Lodge is ever-vigilant about the impact we have on the environment, both locally and globally. And we run our business in a way that helps preserve this place, and by extension this planet, for future generations.
