Tofino Boardwalk 2016

The Tofino Boardwalk will recognize some of the brightest and best in Tofino's arts community

Tofino, Long Beach and the Pacific Rim has an aesthetic, pace and pulse all its own. Dramatic and relaxing at the same time: the soft, wide-sandy beaches are pounded by unrelenting surf while the misty, lush-green rainforests are pierced by snow-capped Mariner Mountain and the coastal mountains above Bedwell Sound while Lone Cone Mountain on Meares Island is a sentinel over Tofino Harbour.

The Tofino, Clayoquot region was a trapping outpost, maritime trading and logging-town, nicknamed "Tough City" for its long, rainy and tempestuous winters.

Eventually, travellers, surfers, hippies and artists discovered the magic of Tofino and Long Beach. Throughout the Sixties, artists of all types migrated to Tofino: painters, sculptors, glass artists, and photographers built an incubator of sorts. Isolated, immersed in a unique slice of Canada, they supported each other and over time, gained a reputation and following.

Walk the streets of Tofino in 2016 and you will find artists’ shops and galleries on almost every corner. From tribal carvings and weavings to contemporary sculpture and painting: art thrives here.

But so does surfing.

The Tofino Arts Council Project ties the two together each year through The Tofino Boardwalk. An artist and sponsorship event, the intention is to connect different aspects of the Tofino community and to build relationships by connecting individual artists with sponsoring businesses or community members. Working together, the artists and community sponsors will transform 16 surfboards into commissioned works of art.

The primary goal is to highlight new and emerging artists by allowing them a chance to shine next to established artists who have helped make Tofino an artistic haven.

The finished boards will be scattered in arts installations throughout Tofino in time for surf season (August 1st - October 31st).

Tofino continues to evolve, grow and mature. But that doesn’t mean we have to forget our roots and traditions. Events like The Tofino Boardwalk help tie the disparate parts together while recognizing some of the brightest and best.
