Queen of the Peak 2015

Sixth-annual surf competition will showcase female competitors including a team from Long Beach Lodge Resort

If you have spent any time at Long Beach Lodge Resort or in Tofino, you will know that Tofino and Ucluelet has some of the best surfers on the west coast - many of them female.

Many have arrived on the Pacific Rim looking for a job and adventure in the most beautiful part of Canada; they try surfing and are hooked.

Seven years ago, Queen of the Peak - Women's Surf Championships, a contest to showcase and celebrate Tofino’s amazing female surf talent, was created. Contestants compete for cash and prizes in longboard, shortboard and “Princess of the Peak” (16 years and under) divisions.

The competition has grown in popularity and sophistication over the years, with free child care and dog sitting services for competitors, a complimentary massage tent for competitors and a welcome dinner compliments of Tofino’s Shelter Restaurant. All proceeds from the event are donated to the Keep a Breast Canada, a breast cancer organization which educates young people on methods of cancer prevention, early detection and support.

For the sixth annual Queen of the Peak - October 2-4th 2015 - Long Beach Lodge Resort is excited to introduce the Resort’s very own surf team: Megan Hall, Laurie Boudreault, Alanna Molloy and Stephanie Lacoste.

Megan Hall

Megan is the events and group sales manager at Long Beach Lodge Resort. Megan first time tried surfing during a backpacking trip to Australia. After that trip, every vacation Megan took was to a surf destination. She moved to Tofino from North Vancouver with the plan of staying for one summer to work on her surfing and 3.5 years later she is still in Tofino. While her work at the Resort keeps her busy year round, during the summer months she offers surf instruction a couple days a week at Surf Sister Surf School. This will be Megan’s first time in the Queen of the Peak competition and she is looking forward to being a part of the event and promoting a weekend of female surfing!

Laurie Boudreault

Laurie Boudreault is a French Canadian who has been living in Tofino for almost three years. Laurie has been surfing for almost four years, having started in Portugal during a trip around the world. She admits that she was hooked from her first ride.

"I couldn't stop! Surfing is a weird thing: you become addicted to the feeling of riding a wave. After traveling, I couldn't stand being away from the waves so I moved to Tofino from Québec. Staying in Canada was the easiest move, even though I fell in love with New Zealand and wanted to go back. I was looking up "where to surf in Canada" and Tofino was one of the only places.”

Laurie says she fell in love with Tofino's lifestyle and beauty and has not had the desire to go back on the road on extended, surf-chasing trips. However, she admits that a warm water surf trip during a future rainy season is a definite possibility, with the most likely destination being Sri Lanka.

Laurie is a server at Long Beach Lodge Resort and, with a friend, recently opened Merge, an artisan collective with a mission to curate beautiful handmade goods from B.C. and around the world.

“I surf as much as I can before or after work and I love it. I am not the best woman surfer out there, but I have fun and I am always learning lots! One funny thing about me: I am scared of the ocean, afraid of snorkeling or diving but I looove surfing.”

Alanna Molloy

Alanna learned to surf in Manly, Australia in 2003 and since then has traveled and surfed many locations and countries, including: Hawaii, Australia, Spain, France, Nicaragua, and Washington State. Alanna has lived in Tofino since May 2010, works as a server at the Resort, and spends a lot of time surfing and in the ocean. She says her favorite places to surf in Tofino is Cox Bay, and Rosie Bay.

Stephanie Lacoste

Stephanie was born-and-raised in Montreal. She started surfing when she was quite young and has traveled extensively, chasing waves. Stephanie came to Tofino in Spring 2015 and after she had discovered it was one of the best surf towns in the world. She is a server at the Resort and also offers surf instruction.

“Surfing is definitely something that I’m passionate about,” Stephanie says. “Hopefully I can travel some more to keep discovering different spots. One thing I learned here is that I'm far from being the best surfer in the water, but I'm certainly one of the happiest!”

Event Information

Depending on conditions, the Queen of the Peak surf contest will be held on either Cox Bay, in front of Long Beach Lodge Resort, or on North Chestermans beach, closer to Tofino. The contest director will make the call on October 1 and it will be posted on the event’s website.
