Kids showcase surfing skills at Tofino

Bruhwiler Kids Surf Classic boasts competitive and recreational division for kids under 18

Kids across Canada might be flocking to rinks for the start of minor hockey season but in Tofino, B.C., children are just as likely to be hitting the surf at Long Beach.

This Saturday, Sept. 19, the second annual Bruhwiler Kids Classic features some of the youngest surfers in the country. A total of 91 kids, from toddlers to teens, have signed up to brave the cold water for the all-day competition.

“They are committed to fun times and learning how to shred harder. Some of them just want to be in the water with their friends. Many of them love to compete and thrive from the excitement of a day at the beach with friends, spectators, sponsors and their families,” says the event’s website.

The event runs from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and the location will be announced Friday or early Saturday morning. Possible beaches include Cox Bay or Chestermans -- get the latest update HERE.

The Kids Surf Classic is named for the Bruhwiler family, which operates the Bruwhiler Surf School in Tofino, B.C.
For the competitive divisions, the contest uses a classic format of heats and a judging panel.

There’s also a non-competitive event without judges for kids more interested in taking part in an “expression session.” This involves surfing in groups of six to eight, just for fun, in a series of heats that last 15 minutes each.

There are no winners or losers and all participants receive an award. Parents can even join their kids in the water to help.

For more serious surfers, there are separate competitive divisions for boys and girls in three age categories: 10 and under, 14 and under and 19 and under. Parents are not allowed to help in the water with these kids.

Registration is now full but spectators are welcome. Go to www.bruhwilerkidsclassic.com for more information.
Every competitor is awarded a medal while making the podium earns a trophy.

As the official end of summer approaches, it’s a great time to celebrate surfing in Tofino, B.C. – the best place in Canada for hitting the board and riding the waves whatever the weather.
