Exploring Tofino by bicycle is now easier

Grants help make it easier to get around Tofino.

Tofino is famous for its West Coast beaches but it’s also a paradise for people who love staying active on their holiday.

Recent improvements to the town’s multi-use path – known locally as the MUP – have made the community even safer for cyclists and runners and present a great opportunity for visitors to Long Beach Lodge Resort to see Tofino by bike.

According to the Westerly News, the improvements widened half a kilometer of the MUP between Olsen Road and Gibson Street as well as added yellow curbs to enhance safety.

Tofino’s manager of community sustainability, Aaron Rodgers, told the local paper that the project could lead to a healthier community as more locals and tourists choose walking or cycling rather than driving, which would also ease pressure on downtown parking.

“We’re always trying to improve our cycling network,” Rodgers told the paper. “This was a section that we’d identified a number of years ago so when the grant came by we applied and got it.”

Money for the $85,000 in improvements came in part from the provincial government’s Resort Municipality Initiative and Cycling Initiative Partnership Program as well as funding from the Federal gas Tax reserve.
The seven kilometer path ends near the Cox Bay Visitors Centre, though it could eventually extend even further if more funding can be found.

Tofino offers an experience for every type of visitor, from those who prefer relaxing in a cottage with their very own hot tub to those who would rather spend the day hiking the rainforest.

Tofino cycling experiences

Visiting cyclists have long enjoyed mountain biking and road racing along routes that are some of the most scenic on the West Coast.

Along with the MUP, many cyclists will pedal over the hard-packed sands of Tofino’s best beaches or test themselves on the hills of Highway 4, a 42 kilometre stretch that goes through Pacific Rim National Park to Ucluelet.

If you need a bike, as the frontdesk staff at Long Beach Lodge Resort and they will steer you in the right direction.
