Top 5 Reasons to Visit Tofino in the Spring

A friend of Long Beach Lodge and a fan of Tofino, recently submitted this for posting on our blog... thanks for sharing Tasha!

Living in Victoria I always look forward to escaping to beautiful Tofino but this is especially true in the spring. After spending the winter cooped up in the rain, enduring painfully short and dark days, and admittedly longing for a gateway; now is the perfect time. The snow begins to melt on the pass, making the drive to Tofino a little less precarious but no less beautiful and if you are lucky you will be able to storm watch and enjoy a beautiful sunny sky all in one weekend. Plus, as the days get longer and the air gets warmer there is more opportunity to explore the incredible natural offerings in the Pacific Rim.

With that in mind I have compiled a list of the top five reasons to head to Tofino in the spring:

1) Perfect hiking weather
– not too hot, not too cold, and generally not too foggy, this is the perfect time to set out and explore the many beaches and trails on offer in the area and get a glimpse of some spectacular views. The What's Your Adventure? section of this website has some favourite area hikes and beach walks listed or  check out for a comprehensive list.

2) The Pacific Rim Whale Festival
– taking place in March, I think it is incredible that Tofino welcomes enough whales (approx.20000) in the Spring to warrant a festival surrounding their arrival. From Community breakfasts to whale watching to art exhibits this event is definitely worth a visit. For more on the whale festival visit:

3) Surf lessons – personally, I think this is the best time to get out there and learn to surf. Storm season starts to wind down the waves are a bit smaller and less intimidating for us newbies and it’s a lot easier to stomach heading into that frigid cold water when the sun is in the sky.

4) Hot Springs Cove – located a short boat ride or float plane away, spring is the perfect time to enjoy the warmth of the hot springs and the beauty of their surroundings without freezing as soon as you get out of the spring. The hot springs have been on my Tofino bucket list for a long time as I have heard nothing but good things.

5) Earth Week – With all that the natural environment in Tofino has to offer why wouldn’t they extend Earth Day celebrations to an entire week? Taking place in April this is a great opportunity to get out and learn more about what you can do to keep our earth a safe and healthy place and also celebrate with the community.

This is by no means an exhaustive list of all that Tofino has to offer in the coming months but a few great excuses to get out there and enjoy.
