Activities for Kids

Kids love the Long Beach area. Who wouldn’t? Here are some ideas to keep them amused and amazed.
  • Explore the beaches and rocky outcrops – tidal pools are home to a wide variety of life, from tiny fish called sculpins, to anenomes, sea stars, crabs, mussells and goose necked barnacles.
  • Explore the varied environment of the area, from sandy beaches to marshes to temperate rainforests. Pacific Rim National Park has many short interpretive walks through differing coastal environments.
  • Keep your eyes out for Vancouver Island’s famed Banana Slugs – these forest dwellers can grow to a length of 8 inches (20 cm), with a few giants reaching 10 inches (25.4 cm), and weights of a quarter of a pound (0.1 kg). The banana slug's colour ranges from dead white to black, lemon yellow, tan, and brown–often with black blotches or spots.
  • Visit the Wickaninnish Centre: Perched on the shore of the Pacific, this interpretive facility focuses on the open ocean. Through exhibits, displays and films, visitors glimpse into the power and majesty of the earth's largest and deepest ocean. Open mid-March to mid-October 10:30am–6pm, 7 days/week.
  • Visit the Raincoast Interpretive Center: www.tofinores.com
  • Visit the Ucluelet Aquarium! This small regional aquarium exhibits a collection exclusive to the west coast of Vancouver Island. Their tanks are seasonally stocked from the waters around Ucluelet and Tofino, and after a period on display, all the sealife is safely returned to the wild. Here you can see what lives beneath – sea stars, sculpin, jellyfish, coral, sole, nudibranchs, sea slugs, crabs, and much more! They even have a hands-on tank! Kids love it… so do adults!
