1,461 days in the making: Celebrate Leap Day at Long Beach Lodge Resort
Jan. 21, 2016, Tofino, BC – Feb. 29 lands every 1,461 days and Long Beach Lodge Resort is marking the occasion with a free night stay for guests looking to take advantage of Leap Day traditions including women popping the question, Leaplings (who were born on Feb. 29) and those salaried employees who work for free every Feb. 29.
Guests who book a minimum three-night stay that includes Monday, Feb. 29 and Tuesday, March 1, 2016 receive the Leap Day night free. Rates start at $229 Cdn ($157 USD in current exchange rates) and include an overnight stay in a Lodge room; access to the Great Room, complete with roaring fire and comfortable seating for enjoying the views over Cox Bay; and complimentary on-site parking. Rainforest Cottages are available starting at $449 Cdn ($307 USD).
There is centuries of tradition surrounding this special quadrennial day, including no-option-out marriage proposals, a proper name for those born on Leap Day, and the subtle reminder that you might be working for free.
Popping the Question?
In 1288, Queen Mary of Scotland set a law that women may propose marriage on Leap Day and that men must accept such a proposal unless they were already engaged or married. Eligible men who refused the offer of marriage were required to buy the woman either a silk dress or a pair of gloves. Long Beach Lodge Resort reassures all men that they will check with the local RCMP detachment to determine whether Queen Mary’s decree is in enforceable in Tofino, BC.
A Leapling, you say?
A person born Feb. 29 is called a Leapling. While many Leaplings celebrate their birthday on either Feb. 28 or March 1 in non-leap years, some Leaplings have a stricter interpretation and only observe their birthday on the authentic intercalary date. Whether a Leapling observes their birthday celebration once every 365 or 1,461 days, it doesn’t matter. The Great Room at Long Beach Lodge Resort provides an inviting space for all birthday guests.
Free time?
If you're on a fixed annual wage, the realization that you are working for free on Leap Day might hit hard. It might be best to take this extra day off to truly enjoy your wage-less day in Tofino instead of your office.
